I've got some budget to buy a new lens for my D7000.
I already have the Nikkor 105 f/105 which I adore but it can be limiting at times. I also use the Nikon 18-55 - obviously not as sharp as the 105 but good still.

I used to use a lot the 18-200 with my previous D50 and was happy with it until I switched to the D7000. Now that it's gone, I'm reluctant to replace it as I have a feeling it's a waste of time with the D7000. Anyone else had the same experience?

I'm very tempted by the Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VRII but it quite a lot more than my budget so I'll probably have to pass on it. What would you recommend to complement my existing lenses (105 and 18-55DX).
Many thanks for your help, Rozenn

I would recommend the 70-200mm f/2.8 as there is no way around the quality and focal length of these lenses. If it's above budget, buy second hand, accept more scratch marks where they don't hurt the results etc.

70-200 is fantastic. It depends on what you are photographing though. The 24-70 is also a great lens although not as long as a focal length, it is more versatile because it can be used in tighter spaces. This is what I use for most of my studio work. Outdoor portraits I love the 70-200.

I also owned the 18-200mm and loved it for the crop framed camera. It was super sharp and very versatile. However, the veritable aperture is annoying, and if you want to go wide open one of the F/2.8 lenses are great.

Also, do you want a zoom or prime? Primes can be cheaper, sharper and open to 1.8 or 1.4, but I love my zooms as I work a lot with kids (fast moving subjects) and it allows me to fill the frame properly better/faster... helps to avoid awkward crops.

I got many of my lens refurbished or used off Adorama or B&H, which are actually sharper then one of my lenses that I bought brand spankin' new! So don't be afraid to go that route. I've found it can save about 10% which on cheaper lenses isn't much but on those lovely pricey lenses it can save you a few hundred! B&H has used lenses at better prices, but have a MUCH smaller stock of them, and it's often hard to find the good lenses used/refurbished there. If you are patient and check back you may get lucky though. Adorama has a much larger selection, the prices are just slightly higher. If they don't have what you want, check back, they will!

Hi Rozenn

If you want primes !!! take the Nikon Af-s 50mm 1.4 or the New Af-s 85mm 1.8 !!! If you like the 70-200 2.8 VRII, try the VR 1. If don´t use converter it´s also a awesome lens or the old 80-200, without VR but fantastic.

ciau !

Alis

Thanks guys for all your advice! I love primes but I'm thinking I need a versatile lens (I also work a lot with kids). I'll do a bit more reading on all these lenses you're talking about. Choosing one will be a tough job!

Just remembered, the d7000 is a CEO frame, so the 24-70 mm will act like a 36-110mm lens on a full frame camera (your 105 is more like a 155mm lens), which is a pretty good range for most things. The 70-200 would be more limiting but you would probably love it anyways.... It's a fantastic piece of glass! My favorite! But only for outdoor portraits.

Thanks Lauriey, how do you find your 14-24? What do you use it for? 70-200 would be my 1st choice but I'm not sure I can afford it. Since my budget is related to an insurance claim, I can only buy new, not second hand, and only from one shop!
I'm thinking that a 10-24 could be an option although I probably would feel less inclined to use it than a 70-200 since my favourite subject is people... Tough call.
One more question, why do you only use you 70-200 outdoors?

Here's a picture accepted today from a 70-200; lots of photographers use 70-200 indoors for portraits too but you do need a little room for it. What you get back is the compression of a telezoom.

14-24 is great for landscapes or such. Honestly the 14-24 is pretty wide for MOST portraits, as it causes distortion. It also allows more of the background to be in focus which isn't always a good thing (more distracting, less 'crisp' or 'finished' look, unless the background adds to the story). I rarely use it for people, unless I want a different look. I probably use it less then I expected I would even.

This was taken at 15mm though:
   Child Hero

This was 200mm
   Training wheels

This is 70mm
   Cowboy Laundry

So it kind of depends on if you want more clear backgrounds, or more blurred backgrounds etc. All of my lenses are 100% worth every dime.

Yes, that's why I use the 105 for most of my photos rather than my 18-55, I love the blurred background and the sharpness of the subject. I imagine that I would use a wide angle for interior shots and landscapes, which are not my favourite subjects, but your example with the 15mm is great.
I love that last one of yours :-)

Rosedarc, have you considered the 55-200 or 55-300? I use the 55-200 on a d7000 quite often. I'm sure the 2.8 lenses are great, but I certainly can't afford them and I don't want to do without the reach between 105 and 200.

Try old Nikon telezoom 80-200mm f/2.8 ED.
Save your budget but quality drop from 70-200mm VRII.
You can use lens for nice effect .
